AI automation for Indiana service businesses
From the Evansville office: AI agents set to each county's clock across Indiana's two time zones, the license rule by trade, and the state's calling laws.
Call us. A person answers in office hours; after hours, leave a message and we call you back within one business day.
Indiana runs on two clocks. Eleven IANA zones cover the state, and every one of them observes daylight saving time, so the Central-time counties around Evansville sit one hour behind most of Indiana all year. An AI voice agent taking after-hours calls here gets its window set by the county the business is in, not by the state.

Recording calls in Indiana
Indiana is a one-party consent state. One party to a phone call can consent to recording it, under IC 35-31.5-2-176 (the definition of interception), IC 35-33.5-5-5 (unlawful interception) and IC 35-33.5-5-4 (the civil action). Last checked September 20, 2026. Indiana's wiretap article reaches only recording or acquisition of the contents of an electronic communication by a person other than a sender or receiver of that communication, without the consent of the sender or receiver, so a party to the call may record it and a third party needs one party's consent. Electronic communication includes oral communication transmitted by wire (IC 35-31.5-2-110); the article reaches electronic communications and does not address a conversation in a room, and it draws no civil-versus-criminal split in the consent rule.
Check the current rule with counsel before a voice agent goes live.

Area codes
Indiana uses 8 geographic area codes: 219, 260, 317, 463, 574, 765, 812, 930.
Privacy and sales tax
Privacy law
The Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act (IC 24-15, Article 15. Consumer Data Protection; Senate Enrolled Act 5 of 2023, P.L.94-2023) has been in force since January 1, 2026.
Telemarketing rules
The Indiana Telephone Solicitation of Consumers act, IC 24-4.7 (the Attorney General's Do Not Call law), with IC 24-5-14 on automatic dialing-announcing devices applies to outbound calls in Indiana: a business that calls or texts Indiana consumers to sell scrubs its list against the Attorney General's quarterly Do Not Call listing (IC 24-4.7-4-1) and gives the caller's true first and last name and the business represented at once (IC 24-4.7-4-2); since P.L.148-2024 a telephone sales call expressly includes SMS, MMS and over-the-top text messages (IC 24-4.7-2-9(b)(3)); the exemptions cover a call the consumer expressly requested or one about an existing debt or unfinished contract, not a general established business relationship; and IC 24-5-14-5 bars an automatic dialing-announcing device unless the subscriber consented or a live operator obtains consent first, except for a message to a subscriber with whom the caller has a current business or personal relationship (IC 24-5-14-5(a)(2)).
Sales tax on software
Software delivered as a service is exempt from sales tax in Indiana. (the whole charge, not a percentage, under IC 6-2.5-4-16.7(b), P.L.200-2018, which says a transaction to remotely access prewritten software over the Internet does not constitute a retail transaction; prewritten software that is downloaded, and software maintenance contracts on it, stay taxable per Sales Tax Information Bulletin #8, at the 7 percent rate IC 6-2.5-2-2(a) sets)
Heating and cooling season
Indiana averages 5,628 heating degree days and 911 cooling degree days a year over 1991-2020.
About this location
Why does the Evansville office run an hour behind most of Indiana?
Vanderburgh County, where the Evansville office sits, keeps Chicago's clock, in the same Central pocket as Posey, Gibson, Warrick and Spencer counties and, at the other end of the state, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper. Perry County and Starke County joined Central in April 2006. The rest of Indiana is Eastern, and the tz database keeps eight separate Eastern zones for it, six of its own plus New York's and Louisville's, because those counties changed clocks on different dates: Pulaski County came back to Eastern in March 2007, Daviess, Dubois, Knox and Martin in 2007, while Dearborn and Ohio counties are filed with New York and Clark, Floyd and Harrison with Louisville. Since 2006 the whole state observes daylight saving time, so the gap never moves with the season: an Eastern-time business is one hour ahead of Evansville in January and in July alike. For an AI voice agent that means one setting to get right, the county of the business, because a cutover written for Eastern time, say 5 p.m., starts the after-hours script an hour early on a Central-time shop, and a handback to the front desk written the same way fires an hour before anyone in that shop is in. Indiana's eight geographic area codes are listed on this page, and any geographic Indiana number carries one of them.
What does an intake agent ask an Indiana contractor about licenses?
Indiana licenses one construction trade at state level, plumbing, through the Indiana Plumbing Commission at the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency under IC 25-28.5; the agency's own page says it is unlawful to act in the capacity of a plumbing contractor or journeyman plumber without a license. The state's Business Owner's Guide says the rest in two sentences: the only construction contractors licensed by the State of Indiana are plumbers, and many of the other specific areas require local licensing which vary by city and county. In practice that means the city or county building department where a local ordinance requires a license, the Monroe County Licensing and Registration Board being one whose page is linked under Verify this. So an intake or quote agent qualifying an Indiana contractor asks two different questions: a plumber is asked for the state license, and an HVAC, electrical or general contractor is asked which county the work is in and what that county's building department issued. The agent cannot assume a state number exists, because for three of the four trades in Indiana it does not.
Who may record a call in Indiana?
Indiana's recording rule turns on who is on the line. IC 35-31.5-2-176 defines interception as the recording or acquisition of the contents of an electronic communication by a person other than a sender or receiver, without the consent of the sender or receiver, and IC 35-31.5-2-110 folds oral communication carried by wire into electronic communication. The definition reaches only a person who is neither the sender nor the receiver, so a party to the call may record it; whether a business answering its own line with an AI voice agent is that receiver is the reading counsel confirms, and the article reaches electronic communications rather than a conversation in a room, with no line between the civil action and the criminal offense.
What changes on the invoice and in the data for an Indiana customer?
On the invoice, an Indiana customer's software subscription carries no sales tax: IC 6-2.5-4-16.7(b), in the Code since P.L.200-2018, says a transaction to remotely access prewritten software over the Internet does not constitute a retail transaction, and the Department of Revenue's Sales Tax Information Bulletin #8 says the same in plain words. The exemption is the whole charge, not a share of it; a downloaded copy of prewritten software, and a maintenance contract on it, still carry the 7 percent rate IC 6-2.5-2-2(a) sets. On the data, the Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act, IC 24-15, has applied since January 1, 2026; whether a given business falls under it turns on the applicability section, IC 24-15-1-1, and that is the question to settle before an agent starts writing Indiana consumers' names, numbers and transcripts into a scheduling system. On the outbound side, Indiana's Do Not Call law has counted a text message as a telephone sales call since P.L.148-2024, so a review or rebooking agent that texts an offer scrubs its list against the Attorney General's quarterly listing first, and IC 24-5-14-5 keeps an automatic dialing-announcing device off a number whose subscriber has not consented, except a subscriber with a current business or personal relationship with the caller.
Questions for Indiana operators
Does an AI voice agent have to announce recording in Indiana?
Not by statute. Indiana's wiretap article, IC 35-31.5-2-176, reaches only a person who is neither the sender nor the receiver of the communication and has consent from neither, so a party to the call may record it. Have counsel read the section before the agent takes its first call.
Who licenses HVAC and plumbing work in Indiana?
Plumbing is the one construction trade Indiana licenses at state level, through the Indiana Plumbing Commission at the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency under IC 25-28.5, and it is unlawful to act as a plumbing contractor or journeyman plumber without that license. HVAC, electrical and general contracting have no state board: the state's Business Owner's Guide says local licensing requirements vary by city and county, so the license an intake agent asks for depends on the county the job is in.
What time zone does after-hours coverage follow in Indiana?
Both of Indiana's. Most counties keep Eastern time; ten counties nearest Chicago and around Evansville, plus Perry and Starke, keep Central. Every one of them observes daylight saving time, so the gap is one hour in January and one hour in July. An agent's after-hours window is set in the zone of the county the business is in, and the Evansville office, inside the Central pocket, reads one hour behind an Eastern-time customer's clock.
Is a software subscription taxed in Indiana?
No. Under IC 6-2.5-4-16.7(b) a transaction to remotely access prewritten software over the Internet does not constitute a retail transaction, so the whole subscription charge is exempt from Indiana sales tax, not a percentage of it. Downloaded prewritten software, and maintenance contracts on it, stay taxable at 7 percent. The Department of Revenue's Sales Tax Information Bulletin #8 is the guidance to read.
Is there a consumer privacy law in Indiana?
Yes. The Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act, IC 24-15, has been in force since January 1, 2026, added to the Code by Senate Enrolled Act 5 of 2023. Which businesses it reaches turns on its applicability section, IC 24-15-1-1, so read that section or ask counsel before an agent starts storing Indiana consumers' names, numbers and call records on the assumption that the act does not apply.
Can a review agent text past customers in Indiana?
Only inside the Do Not Call law. Since P.L.148-2024 a telephone sales call under IC 24-4.7-2-9(b)(3) expressly includes SMS, MMS and over-the-top text messages, so a text that sells is scrubbed against the Attorney General's quarterly listing (IC 24-4.7-4-1) and gives the business and the sender's true first and last name (IC 24-4.7-4-2). The exemptions cover a message the consumer expressly asked for or one about an existing debt or unfinished contract, not a past-customer relationship as such.
